Functional Description
IC660BBD020 is a Discrete I/O Module developed by GE Fanuc. It is a versatile 24/48 VDC source I/O block from the GE Fanuc Series 90-30 Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). It is designed to interface with 3-wire solid-state and electromechanical sensors, making it highly adaptable for various industrial applications. The block is configurable, allowing each of its 16 discrete circuits to function as inputs, tristate inputs, or outputs with a range of adjustable parameters and features.
Features
- Circuit Configuration: Offers 16 discrete circuits, each of which can be independently configured to serve as an input, tristate input, or output. This flexibility allows the block to be tailored to specific application needs, whether for monitoring, control, or a combination of both.
- Power Supply and Output: This block operates on a 24 or 48-VDC power supply, providing current only to output devices. It ensures reliable operation and connectivity between the PLC and field devices, such as sensors and actuators. Each circuit's status is indicated by corresponding LED indicators, allowing easy monitoring of each input and output.
- Advanced Diagnostics: Equipped with sophisticated diagnostic capabilities that detect installation issues or runtime errors. It can identify and report problems such as short circuits, over-temperature conditions, failed switches, open wires, overloads, and no-load situations. These diagnostics are crucial for maintaining system integrity and ensuring timely corrective actions.
- Compatibility and Installation: Compatible with the Terminal Assembly IC66TSD020 version C or later. However, it is not compatible with earlier versions assemblies unless they are upgraded. For monitoring and configuration, any handheld monitor can be used except for the IC66HHM501, which requires additional configuration.
Installation
- Proper installation requires a clean, contaminant-free environment with adequate cooling airflow.
- The block can be mounted in any orientation, right-side up or upside down, but special attention must be given to grounding, especially using the block’s mounting screws.
- A short, reliable ground lead is essential to ensure proper operation.
Diagnostic Features
- Unit OK LED Indicator: The Unit OK LED on the module will begin blinking to indicate that a fault condition exists, alerting operators to a potential issue.
- Fault Reporting: The module will automatically send a fault message to the bus controller and/or the monitoring CPU on the next available bus scan, unless fault reporting is disabled for the specific circuit. This ensures that faults are communicated efficiently throughout the system for quick resolution.
- Hand-Held Monitor Integration: The fault information is continuously available through the Hand-held Monitor, which polls the block for updates and allows the operator to monitor the status of the module in real time.
- Corrective Action for Certain Faults: In response to some faults, the module may take corrective action to prevent hazardous operations or damage. For example, in the case of output faults, the module will automatically turn off the affected output to prevent further issues. This protective mechanism enhances safety by reducing the risk of damage to the system.
- Clearing Faults: Faults can be cleared either through the Hand-held Monitor or the CPU. If the fault condition has not been rectified, the module will resend the fault message after the fault has been cleared, ensuring that the operator is made aware of unresolved issues.
- Automatic Restoration: When a fault causes a circuit to shut down, the module will restore that circuit to full operation as soon as the fault is corrected. This automatic restoration minimizes downtime and ensures that the system returns to normal operation swiftly once the fault is resolved.
Grounding and Shielding Considerations
- Proper grounding is essential for the reliable operation of the module. The Shield Out termination of each block is directly connected to the module’s chassis ground. Additionally, the Shield Out termination is capacitively coupled to Shield In, helping to mitigate any differences in ground potential between blocks on the bus (up to 50V of continuous difference). This feature reduces the likelihood of electrical noise or signal interference that could affect system performance.
- In order to ensure ground integrity, the following steps should be followed during installation:
- Use hardware such as star washers to secure grounding connections and provide reliable ground continuity.
A ground wire with a minimum size of AWG #12 should be connected from the ground screw on each Genius I/O block to the panel ground. This helps maintain consistent grounding and ensures safe operation of the system.
