FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION:

DS200UDSAG is a Display/Keyboard Interface Board manufactured and designed by General Electric as part of the EX2000 Series used in GE Excitation Control systems. A Display/Keyboard Interface Board is a hardware component used to connect and control both a display screen and a keyboard to a computer system or microcontroller. The display interface includes a dot matrix display, with two rows of 40 characters and 1 row with 12 characters. The 2 keypads feature a total of 48 keys. One keypad contains 32 (2 sets of 16) configurable keys, which are backed with status LEDs. The other keypad has 16 keys that allow numeric entry, local mode functions, and diagnostics. The major hardware components for the USDA are:

  • -24 V to 5 V switching power supply with a minimum of 3 A at 5 V
  • Microprocessor core
  • RS-232C interface circuitry
  • Keypad scanning interface circuitry
  • The key status LED interface circuitry
  • Display driver circuitry
  • Key LED and display pulse-width modulated (PWM) dimmer circuitry

KEY FEATURES AND FUNCTIONS OF A DISPLAY/KEYBOARD INTERFACE BOARD:

  • Display Connection: It provides the necessary interfaces (such as VGA, HDMI, or specific LCD connectors) to connect different types of display screens (monitors, LCDs, LEDs, etc.) to the main system.
  • Keyboard Interface: The board incorporates connectors or circuitry to interface with standard keyboards (USB, PS/2, or others) allowing input from the keyboard to be processed by the system.
  • Microcontroller/Processor Integration: It often includes a microcontroller or processing unit to manage the input and output functions between the display and keyboard and the main computer system.
  • Signal Processing: The board manages the signals between the display and keyboard and the main system, handling tasks like keypress detection, screen refresh rate control, and data transmission.
  • Driver Support: Some boards come with pre-installed drivers or software libraries to simplify the integration of the display and keyboard with the host system.
  • Power Management: It may include components for power regulation and distribution to ensure that the display and keyboard receive the correct power supply.
  • Expansion and Customization: Depending on the specific board, there might be provisions for adding additional features or customizations like backlight control, touchscreen support, or specialized keyboard functions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is a Display/Keyboard Interface Board?

A Display/Keyboard Interface Board is a hardware component that facilitates the connection and communication between a display screen (such as a monitor or LCD) and a keyboard with a computer system or microcontroller. It acts as an intermediary to enable user interaction and data input/output.

What is the purpose of a Display/Keyboard Interface Board?

The main purpose is to provide a user-friendly interface for interacting with a computer or embedded system. It allows users to input commands via a keyboard and view output on a connected display, enabling tasks such as data entry, monitoring, and control.

How do I interface a Display/Keyboard Interface Board with my system?

Interface boards typically come with documentation and software libraries to assist with integration. You would connect the display and keyboard to the board using compatible cables or connectors, and then interface the board with your system using standard communication protocols (e.g., USB, UART, SPI).
