Functional Description
DS200LSTQF1CEE is a GE Software PROM Set designed and developed by GE. It is a part of the Mark V control system. EPROMs are programmed or written electrically using special programming equipment. Once programmed, the data stored in an EPROM remains intact even when the power is turned off. However, what sets EPROM apart from other ROMs is its erasable feature. To erase the data stored in an EPROM, it needs to be exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light for a specified amount of time. This process erases the memory, allowing it to be reprogrammed with new data.
Features
- Programmability: EPROMs are programmable, meaning you can write data onto them. Initially, they come blank, and you can use a device called a programmer to write data onto specific memory locations.
- Non-volatile Memory: Unlike RAM (Random Access Memory), which loses its data when power is removed, EPROM retains its programmed data even when power is turned off.
- Read-Only Memory: EPROM is read-only in normal circumstances, meaning the data stored on it can be read or accessed but not easily modified.
- Erasable: EPROM can be erased and reprogrammed multiple times. Erasure is typically done through exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light for a specified duration, which clears the memory cells, allowing them to be reprogrammed.
- Usage: EPROMs were widely used in early computers, embedded systems, and devices that required firmware or data storage that could be modified occasionally. They were used to store BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) in computers, firmware in devices, and other critical data.
- Physical Structure: EPROMs have a quartz window on top through which the UV light is applied during the erasure process. This window allows the UV light to penetrate and erase the memory cells.
- Limitations: EPROMs have become less prevalent in modern electronics due to their requirement for UV erasure, which is less convenient compared to newer memory technologies like EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) and Flash memory, which can be erased and reprogrammed electronically without UV exposure.
