Functional Description

DS3800XCIA is a Turbine Control Card manufactured and designed by General Electrics. It is a part of the Mark IV Series used in Speedtronic Gas Turbine Control Systems. The Speedtronic Mark IV System was developed to improve the reliability, maintainability, and operational efficiency of gas turbines.

Hardware Features

  • The hardware design of the Mark IV panel was developed with several key objectives to enhance flexibility, maintainability, and efficiency.
  • One primary goal was to create a base design that could accommodate 95% of customer panel requirements without significant hardware modifications. Instead of requiring extensive physical changes, the panel was designed to be adaptable through software configurations, with only minimal hardware adjustments such as adding or removing optional cards, modules, or cables. While the design was rigorously tested against historical requirements, its long-term ability to meet future customer needs remains to be seen.
  • Another crucial objective was ensuring that the panel could be repaired while the turbine remained operational. Significant effort was put into arranging the panel so that most components could be replaced safely and easily while the system remained energized. To facilitate this, critical modules containing the majority of active components—those most prone to failure—were placed on the front doors for convenient access.
  • To further enhance repairability, the Mark IV panel was designed using modular physical components that could be easily handled by a single technician. This design approach was largely successful, with the exception of the black start inverter, which is undergoing redesign to align with system standards.
