FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION:
79482-01 is a Dual Thrust Position Monitor manufactured and designed by Bently Nevada as part of the 3300 Series for machinery vibration monitoring systems. The 3300/20 Dual Thrust Position Monitor provides early warning of thrust bearing failure. It continuously measures and monitors two independent shaft axial position channels relative to the machine's axial clearances. Ideally, the axial probes are installed to observe the thrust collar directly, so the measurement represents the position of the collar relative to the thrust bearing clearance. Because thrust measurements are made by observing the gap voltage of the proximity probe used as an input, a transducer failure (gap out of range) can be interpreted by the monitor as thrust position movement and result in a false thrust alarm.
For this reason, Bently Nevada LLC. does not recommend the use of a single probe for thrust position applications. Instead, these applications should use two proximity probes observing the same collar or shaft and configure the monitor as AND voting whereby both transducers must simultaneously reach or exceed their alarm setpoints for the monitors alarm relays to actuate. This 2-out-of-2 voting scheme (also known as AND voting) provides optimum protection against both false trips and missed trips. While the 3300/20 monitor can be programmed for either single voting (OR) or dual voting (AND), dual voting is strongly recommended for all thrust position applications
FUNCTIONS OF DUAL THRUST POSITION MONITOR:
The primary function of the Bently Nevada Dual Thrust Position Monitor is to provide real-time monitoring of a rotating shafts axial position using non-contact proximity probes. It measures the relative position of the shaft concerning its thrust bearing, ensuring that displacement remains within acceptable limits. If axial movement exceeds predefined thresholds, the monitor triggers alarms or initiates a protective shutdown to prevent damage.
The monitor is equipped with dual-channel sensing, enabling redundant and independent measurements for enhanced reliability. It continuously logs and analyzes axial position data, allowing maintenance teams to detect early signs of bearing wear, misalignment, or excessive thrust loads. This predictive maintenance capability minimizes unplanned downtime and extends equipment lifespan.
Integration with Bently Nevadas 3500 Series Monitoring System enables seamless communication with Distributed Control Systems (DCS) or Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), providing centralized data acquisition and analysis. The system also supports API 670 compliance, meeting stringent industry standards for rotating machinery protection.

What is the operating principle of the Bently Nevada Dual Thrust Position Monitor?
The Bently Nevada Dual Thrust Position Monitor operates using eddy current proximity probes to measure the axial displacement of a rotating shaft relative to its thrust bearing. The system continuously monitors the shaft's position, providing real-time data to detect misalignment, excessive thrust load, or bearing wear. If displacement exceeds preset limits, the system triggers alarms or initiates shutdown procedures to prevent mechanical damage.
What types of proximity probes are compatible with the monitor?
The system is compatible with Bently Nevadas non-contact eddy current proximity probes, such as the 3300 XL and 3500 Series proximity transducers. These probes provide high-resolution axial position measurements and ensure accurate thrust monitoring in industrial machinery. The probes operate based on electromagnetic principles, detecting variations in the shaft position by measuring changes in the probe gap voltage.
How does the system process and analyze axial displacement data?
The Dual Thrust Position Monitor processes axial displacement data by converting the voltage signals from proximity probes into digital displacement readings. It uses a high-speed signal processing unit to filter out noise and provide precise measurements. The system also incorporates real-time diagnostics, trend analysis, and alarm logic to enhance predictive maintenance and early fault detection.
