Functional Description

IS220SRTDH2ABB is a Simplex RTD Board developed by GE. It is a part of Mark VIe control system. The board is a compact, high-density RTD terminal board designed for efficient and versatile mounting options, including both DIN-rail and flat mounting configurations. The board is equipped with eight inputs specifically designed for RTD sensors, allowing for the monitoring and measurement of temperature from multiple points.

Features

  • Designed to interface seamlessly with either the PRTD or VRTD I/O processors. This connectivity ensures that temperature data collected from the RTD sensors is accurately processed and integrated into the overall control and monitoring system.
  • High-density Euro-block type terminal blocks are mounted on the board. These terminal blocks provide secure, reliable connections for the RTD inputs, ensuring stable and accurate signal transmission.
  • It includes an on-board identification chip. This chip serves a crucial role in system diagnostics by identifying the board and the connected I/O processor. This feature enhances the system ability to perform self-checks, monitor functionality, and troubleshoot issues effectively.

Installation

  • Mounting on DIN Rail: It is mounted on a sheet metal carrier along with a plastic insulator. This assembly can then be mounted onto a standard DIN rail, a common and convenient method for installing industrial control equipment.
  • Direct Cabinet Mounting: Alternatively, the board and the plastic insulator can be mounted on a sheet metal assembly that bolts directly into an equipment cabinet. This method provides a secure and permanent installation within an enclosure, suitable for environments where DIN rail mounting is not feasible or preferred.
  • Wiring the RTDs: The eight RTDs are wired directly to the Euro-style box type terminal block. This terminal block features 36 terminals, with terminals 25 through 34 not connected. Two types of Euro-style terminal blocks are available to cater to different wiring preferences and standards.
  • Wire Specifications: Typically, 18 AWG wires are used for connecting the RTDs. Shielded twisted triplet cables are recommended to minimize electrical noise and ensure signal integrity. Proper shielding is crucial for accurate temperature measurement, particularly in electrically noisy environments.
  • I/O Cable Shielding: The shield of the I/O cable should be connected to a shield terminal. An external mounting bracket for the shield terminal is provided by either GE or the customer, depending on the installation setup.
  • Grounding: Includes designated mounting holes, labeled E1 and E2, for securing the chassis ground screw connection (SCOM). Proper grounding is essential for the safety and reliability of the system, ensuring that any electrical interference or faults are effectively mitigated.

Operation

  • The board operates by supplying a 10 mA DC multiplexed excitation current to each RTD. This excitation current is not continuous but is sequentially applied to each RTD, which reduces self-heating effects and improves measurement accuracy. The RTDs connected to the board can be either grounded or ungrounded, offering flexibility in sensor configuration based on specific application needs.
  • One of the notable features of the board is its ability to support RTDs located up to 300 meters (984 feet) away from the turbine control cabinet. This long-distance capability is facilitated by allowing a maximum two-way cable resistance of 15 ohm, ensuring that the integrity of the signal is maintained over these distances. Additionally, the board includes noise suppression features similar to those found on the TRTD board, which help to filter out electrical noise and enhance the accuracy of temperature readings.
  • The signal processing on the board involves an A/D (Analog-to-Digital) converter in the PRTD pack, which samples each RTD signal and the excitation current four times per second during normal mode scanning. For applications requiring faster response times, the system can switch to fast mode scanning, where the sampling rate increases to 25 times per second. This high sampling rate is synchronized with the power system frequency, ensuring precise and timely temperature measurements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IS220SRTDH2ABB?
It is a Simplex RTD Board developed by GE under the Mark VIe series.

What type of excitation current does the board supply to the RTDs?
It supplies a 10 mA DC multiplexed excitation current to each RTD. This means the current is sequentially applied to each RTD rather than continuously, reducing self-heating and enhancing measurement accuracy.

Can the RTDs connected to the board be either grounded or ungrounded?
Yes, the RTDs can be either grounded or ungrounded, providing flexibility in sensor configuration based on specific application needs.

How far can the RTDs be located from the turbine control cabinet?
The RTDs can be located up to 300 meters (984 feet) away from the turbine control cabinet. The system supports a maximum two-way cable resistance of 15 ohm to maintain signal integrity over this distance.
