Functional Description

IS2020LVPSG1AC is a Power Supply Module developed by GE. It is a part of the Mark VI control system. The power supply unit is conveniently mounted on the side of the VME racks, ensuring easy accessibility and integration within the system setup. It is designed to accommodate both 5, 12, 15, and 28 V dc outputs to the VME backplane, catering to diverse operational requirements.

Features

  • Input Voltage Selection for Versatile Application: The power supply module is designed to offer flexibility in input voltage selection, catering to different system configurations and operational scenarios. It provides two distinct input voltage options:
    • Primary Input (125V DC): The primary power source is a 125V DC configuration, which is supplied from a dedicated Power Distribution Module (PDM). This setup ensures a stable, robust, and uninterrupted power supply, enhancing system reliability in high-performance industrial environments.
    • Secondary Input (24V DC): For applications requiring lower voltage operation, the module also supports a 24V DC input option. This broadens its compatibility with various system configurations and expands its usability across different environments and power setups.
  • 2. Stable and Regulated Functional Outputs: Equipped with multiple output voltage options, ensures regulated power distribution to the VME backplane, which in turn supports the operation of various control system modules and interface components. The power supply delivers:
    • Positive and negative voltage outputs, ensuring comprehensive power coverage for all system peripherals.
    • Stable and consistent power delivery, reducing fluctuations and protecting sensitive electronic components from damage or operational instability.
  • Seamless Integration with System Components: One of the standout features of this module is its seamless integration with other Mark VI VME control system components. It is strategically mounted on the side of the rack, optimizing space utilization while allowing easy access for maintenance and servicing tasks. This modular design enhances overall system efficiency, making troubleshooting, upgrades, and replacements more convenient and less time-consuming.
  • Reliability and High-Performance Design: The power supply module is engineered to meet stringent industrial performance standards, ensuring high durability and reliability in demanding control system applications. Key performance highlights include:
    • Rugged Construction: Built with high-quality materials to withstand harsh environmental conditions, vibrations, and electrical disturbances.
    • Advanced Circuitry: Incorporates cutting-edge power regulation technology to minimize voltage fluctuations, thereby enhancing the longevity of system components.
    • Operational Efficiency: Designed to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency, ensuring that critical control processes remain uninterrupted.

Installation Procedure

  • The power supply unit is affixed to the right-hand side of the VME rack using a sturdy sheet metal bracket. Positioned at the bottom of the unit are the inputs for DC power, along with outputs for both 28 V DC and 335 V DC. In the updated design, a status connector has been included at the bottom for improved monitoring and control. At the top of the assembly, two connectors, PSA and PSB, are situated to connect with a cable harness responsible for transmitting power to the VME rack.
  • Power Distribution within the VME Rack: Each of the five 28 V DC power modules within the supply unit is allocated to power a specific section of the VME rack, which is segmented into labeled sections A, B, C, D, E, and F. Notably, the P28C output or PS28 at the base of the power supply can be utilized to power an external peripheral device if required. To enable this functionality, the jumper plug located on the bracket to the left of the rack must be repositioned from the Normal setting to the Isolated setting below it.
  • Cooling System Integration: The cooling fan associated with the power supply unit operates solely when the controller is installed within the rack. Its power supply is facilitated through the top connector on the bracket, which is conveniently situated on the left side of the rack. This configuration ensures optimal airflow and temperature regulation within the rack assembly, contributing to the efficient operation and longevity of the components.

Fault Conditions

  • Transient Output Shutdowns: These faults result in the temporary shutdown of one or more output channels of the power supply. While disruptive, these shutdowns are typically brief and do not necessitate manual intervention to resolve. The affected output channels may automatically resume operation once the fault condition is rectified or mitigated.
  • Reset-Required Faults: In this category, faults occur that require manual intervention or a reset action to clear. Unlike transient shutdowns, these faults persist until appropriate measures are taken to reset the power supply unit. Depending on the nature of the fault, this may involve power cycling the unit, performing specific reset procedures, or addressing underlying issues causing the fault.
  • Permanent Failures: These faults represent the most severe category, indicating permanent failures within the power supply unit. Such failures render the affected components or circuits inoperable and typically necessitate the replacement of the entire power supply unit. Permanent failures may result from critical component damage, circuitry malfunctions, or other irreparable issues, requiring comprehensive troubleshooting and remediation measures.
  • Addressing Fault Conditions: Upon detection of any fault condition, it is imperative to follow established protocols for fault diagnosis, mitigation, and resolution. Depending on the severity of the fault and its impact on system operation, appropriate steps should be taken promptly to restore normal functionality, minimize downtime, and ensure the reliability and integrity of the power supply system. Regular maintenance, monitoring, and proactive troubleshooting can help prevent and mitigate fault conditions, ensuring the continued performance and stability of the power supply unit.
