Functional Description
5416-190 is a NetCon Serial I/O Cable developed by Woodward. This cable is specifically designed to facilitate serial data transmission between various control and monitoring devices, providing robust and efficient connectivity solutions in demanding environments.
Features
- The NetCon Serial I/O Cable is engineered to ensure seamless data communication between industrial equipment, controllers, and monitoring systems. It is constructed with high-quality materials that enable fast and stable serial connections, allowing for effective transmission of signals and data in real-time.
- The cable is designed to withstand the harsh conditions typically found in industrial settings, including exposure to temperature fluctuations, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and vibrations. This makes it a reliable choice for systems that require constant uptime and performance.
- The NetCon Serial I/O Cable is compatible with a wide range of Woodward control systems, including machinery protection and speed control modules, among others. It ensures smooth integration with Woodward products and provides reliable communication across systems.
- Constructed using durable and flexible materials, the cable ensures long-term use without degradation of signal quality. It is also designed to minimize the risk of communication errors or interruptions, enhancing the reliability of the connected systems.
Replacement Procedure
- Reset the CPU: Move the CPU switch to the reset position.
- Remove the Cable Saddle: Detach the cable saddle from the top of the chassis by unscrewing the two screws securing it.
- Release the Module: Unscrew the captive-screw fasteners (one at the top and one at the bottom of the module). Simultaneously press the top handle upwards and the bottom handle downwards to release the module.
- Unseat the Module: Carefully pull the module out from the motherboard along the card guide slots until it is approximately 25 mm (1 inch) from the motherboard.
- Disconnect the I/O Cable from the Module: Detach the I/O cable from the module, ensuring the cable ends are secured to prevent damage or shorting of pins. To disengage, slide the latch towards the top of the module.
- Disconnect the I/O Cable from the FTM or Relay/Discrete Input Module: If needed, remove the cable shield termination clamp, particularly in commercial Marine installations near the FTM.
- Install the Replacement I/O Cable: Attach the replacement I/O cable to the FTM or Relay/Discrete Input module, securing the cable to prevent pin damage or shorting. If applicable, install the cable shield termination clamp next to the FTM in commercial Marine installations.
- Reconnect the I/O Cable to the Module: Use the slide latch to engage the I/O cable with the module (slide the latch towards the bottom). Ensure the cable is connected to the correct connector.
- Seat the Module: With equal pressure applied to both the top and bottom of the module, carefully reinsert the module into the motherboard.
- Tighten the Captive-Screws: Secure the module by tightening the two captive-screw fasteners (top and bottom).
- Reapply Power: If power was removed, restore power to the system.
- Set the CPU to Run Mode: Put the CPU module back into run mode.
- Verify Functionality: Check that the new MicroNet module is working properly.
- Reinstall the Cable Saddle: Reattach the cable saddle to its original position.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 5416-190?
It is a NetCon Serial I/O Cable developed by Woodward.
Do I need to turn off power before replacing the I/O cable?
Yes, it is recommended to remove power from the system before replacing the I/O cable to ensure safety and avoid damage to the components during the replacement process.
Can I reuse the I/O cable after disconnection?
It is generally advised to inspect the I/O cable for any signs of damage before reusing it. If the cable is intact and in good condition, it may be reused, but damaged or worn cables should be replaced for optimal performance and safety.
How do I ensure that the new I/O cable is correctly installed?
After replacing the I/O cable, make sure to securely connect it to both the module and the corresponding input/output ports. Check that the connections are firm and that no pins are shorted or exposed.
What is the function of the slide latch on the I/O cable?
The slide latch is a locking mechanism used to securely engage or disengage the I/O cable from the module. To connect or disconnect the cable, slide the latch towards the appropriate direction (top or bottom) for easy installation and removal.
Can I install an I/O cable in any module slot?
I/O cables must be connected to the designated module slot that corresponds to their functionality. Make sure to consult the manual for the correct slot configuration and installation instructions.
